ABOUT US

OUR VISION

To build a united and compassionate Devangar Catholic community rooted in faith, service, and mutual support — empowering every member to live with dignity, purpose, and love for one another.

OUR COMMUNITY

We engage in charitable and developmental activities that touch every aspect of our members’ lives. From educational assistance and medical aid to funeral support and social service programs, we are committed to uplifting individuals and strengthening families across our community.

Our community is our strength — a family bound by faith, culture, and compassion. Together, we celebrate our traditions, care for one another, and work hand in hand to build a brighter, more inclusive future for all Devangar Catholics.

OUR HISTORY

New horizons and challenges have always drawn individuals who possess the determination to succeed and excel in life. Our forefathers shared this spirit and, in the early 1940s, took the bold step of moving to the city of Bombay in search of better opportunities. A series of difficult circumstances led them to make this life-changing decision.

In the period following World War II, there was a severe shortage of cotton yarn, which proved disastrous for the handloom weavers across the ten villages of Coimbatore. As a result, weaving units were forced to shut down, leaving many without a livelihood. Around the same time, news reached them that Bombay’s textile industry was flourishing and facing a shortage of skilled weavers. This opportunity prompted our forefathers to migrate to Bombay between 1945 and 1955.

Despite having little or no formal education, their exceptional weaving skills helped them secure stable employment. Gradually, more members of our community from the South were drawn to Bombay. However, life in the city brought its own set of challenges. There arose a need for a guiding body that could address cultural and religious concerns while also supporting the education of their children.

The unfortunate murder of one of our early settlers in 1952 further strengthened the resolve to establish a united front. This led to the formation of a community organization aimed at fostering security, unity, and a sense of belonging.

Since 1956, and over the decades that followed, our Sangam has remained committed to its mission of serving the community. With a strong focus on supporting the underprivileged, the Sangam continues to provide:

  1. Financial assistance to school students in Standards VIII, IX, and X

  2. Monetary awards to meritorious students achieving top scores in SSC and HSC examinations

  3. Interest-free, refundable loans for college students

  4. Medical assistance to the poor and needy

  5. Support for funeral expenses of families in need
